Our history

Studebaker's roots go back to 1852, when the company grew into the world's largest wagon builder. From wheelbarrows during the gold rush to carriages for the United States Army, Studebaker became known early on for quality and craftsmanship. At the start of the twentieth century the brand moved from electric vehicles to the combustion engine and grew into one of the most distinctive marques in America.

From the 1930s to the 1950s Studebakers gained their characteristic shape thanks to designer Raymond Loewy. His forward-looking designs, such as the famous “Bulletnose” Commander and later the Avanti, gave the brand a unique place among the more conservative American competition. Studebaker built cars that dared to be different: lighter, more elegant and technically inventive.

Packard, founded in 1899, represented the other side of the American car world: luxury and prestige. In the “Roaring Twenties” Packard was seen as one of the most exclusive brands in the world. After the Second World War the market shifted fast, and in 1954 Studebaker and Packard merged into the Studebaker-Packard Corporation. Despite strong models and creative solutions it proved difficult to compete with the big conglomerates, and in 1966 the last Studebaker rolled off the line.

The Studebaker-Packard Club Netherlands was founded on 29 May 1999 to keep this heritage alive. SPCN is an official Overseas Region of The Packard Club and an Overseas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club. What started as a small group of enthusiasts has grown into an active community where driving, engineering and history come together. Through tours, technical days and international contacts the club carries on the old Studebaker motto:

“Always give more than they asked for.”
